Lynn M. – My Story

Lynn before and afterGastric Bypass  |  2009

My Life Before Bariatric Surgery

When I was morbidly obese, I experienced daily pain in my feet, ankles, knees, and hips. I found it difficult to move through my daily activities (stairs, moderate walks, etc.) and was afraid to try exercise.

My professional credibility and overall personal confidence were compromised by obesity. I was always aware that I was the largest woman/person in the room during meetings or professional events.

I felt hopeless about losing weight, and knew that my weight had become unmanageable, but had failed at so many diets…I didn’t know where to turn.

Making the Decision

After my consultation with a Barix surgeon, I did a great deal of research and attended regular support group meetings as a pre-op. I had tremendous confidence in my surgeon’s skill and expertise, and trusted her advice that the only long term solution for my obesity problem would be bariatric surgery.

My Barix Clinics Experience

Barix Clinics provided an unmatchable experience from the moment I walked through the door. The surgeons, office staff, and nursing staff are capable and dedicated to patient success. I also appreciate the full range of support from the dietitians, who offer guidance for every stage of pre-op and recovery eating plans, and the wonderful support group options. (I have moved out of state and miss my Barix support meetings!) My entire experience at Barix was exceptional!!!

How My Life Has Changed

At age 60, I am in outstanding health. I take no medications aside from my post-op vitamin regimen. My lab work is perfect!

I am proud to say that I have maintained almost 90% of my total weight loss 6 1/2 years after surgery. A healthy diet is now “normal” for me – lean proteins come first, with lots of fresh vegetables, delicious fruits, and carefully chosen starches. I am far more mindful about my eating than in the past, and respect my body more than ever before.

Like many others, I struggle to find time for consistent exercise but enjoy yoga, water aerobics, and classes at the gym. Every time I finish a workout, I am thankful that I made the choice to break free of the limits that obesity placed on me.

Of course, I enjoy my expanded wardrobe choices, but perhaps the greatest pleasure lies in the simple things – picking up a pair of size 8 jeans, or a t-shirt in size small or medium still surprises me.

My energy level is terrific. I work in a fast paced environment with many younger co-workers and keep up just fine. I meet each day with confidence and a great outlook.
