Sharon P. – My Story

Sharon before and afterGastric Bypass  |  2009My Life Before Bariatric Surgery

I was 46 years old, and could barely get through the day. My husband had to take care of the household responsibilities due to my extreme fatigue. I took over 20 pills everyday due to all of the health issues.  I was being treated for hypertension, Sarcoidosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines and gout.  I was in constant pain with absolutely no energy.

I was extremely restricted in my activities due to my size and poor health.

Making the Decision

I knew that I was in no condition physically to lose the weight without surgery.  I also knew that if I didn’t do something, there was a good chance I would end up in a wheelchair by the time I turned 50.

I attended the seminars at three hospitals in the area I live (Cincinnati).  A friend of mine advised me to contact the Barix Clinic.  She had gastric bypass surgery there a few years prior.  I was impressed with the facility, the staff and the surgeon.  It was my first choice even though I had to travel almost 100 miles from home.  I was pleased to find out that it was in my network for insurance coverage.  The staff at Barix did the legwork to get my insurance approval.  It was approved in a two week period of time, and I scheduled my surgery.

My Barix Clinics Experience

The staff was wonderful. I thought it was great to have such individual attention. My surgeon was honest about what the surgery could offer me, and what I would need to commit for it to be a success.  The nurses were kind and compassionate.

How My Life Has Changed

I followed my surgeon’s instructions to the letter.  I concentrated on eating protein and getting at least 64 ounces of water in every day.  I began walking for exercise as soon as I was on my feet from the surgery.  It’s now been almost sixteen months, and I still have never eaten any processed sugar.  It has been an extremely rewarding experience as I watched the weight melt away.

I now have lots of energy.  I am able to take care of the things around the house that my husband had to do before.  I spend my days off shopping and running errands rather than resting at home.  I go to the YMCA and work out regularly.  I go see friends in the evenings.  My life is so much richer than it was 18 months ago.

To Those Considering Bariatric Surgery

Make the most of the first 6 to 9 months!  That’s when you will lose the most significant amount of weight.  Exercise regularly and follow the diet exactly as directed.  You won’t regret it!
