Shawn M. - My Story

Gastric Sleeve |  2013

My Life Before Surgery:

Before surgery I was a 36-year-old 394 pound professional who had everything in life except one of the most important things--my health. I was on an extremely high dose of two medications and my blood pressure was still out of control. I had joint pain and sleep apnea and was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Not only was my health diminishing quickly, I wasn't able to enjoy the fun things in life. I was missing out on family vacations and other adventurous activities like zip-lining, roller coasters and white water rafting. I couldn’t even travel on an airplane without feeling self conscious and out of place.

Making the Decision:

The last straw was getting the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.  On top of the sleep apnea, out of control blood pressure and the big 4-0 birthday in the near future, I decided if anytime was right, it was the present. I wanted to reach that milestone birthday in the best shape of my life.

My Barix Clinics Experience:

I had a great experience with my surgeon, his staff, the surgical staff and nursing staff at the hospital. I have always recommended Barix Clinics in Ypsilanti since the day I started the program there.

My surgeon answered all of my questions anytime I had them. The floor nursing staff kept me in high spirits and extremely comfortable post surgery. Every time I am in for a check-up, the receptionist remembers me and is pleasant. My surgeon’s nurse has always got back to me almost immediately.

How My Life Has Changed:

Well…life is AWESOME. I am down 172 pounds as of today 9/25/2017 and it hasn't even been a year. I have already accomplished a lot of things over the past year I could never have done before surgery such as riding roller coasters at Cedar Point, snow skiing, 10-mile mountain hikes, daily cycle rides for 15+ miles and daily gym visits. Life couldn't be better and THANK YOU for assisting me in getting it back!

To Those Considering Bariatric Surgery:

Always remember that no matter which surgery you get it is only (1) tool in the tool box of success. It isn't a miracle cure. You must be dedicated; willing to change your old horrible habits and become active; educated about the food you are eating; and prepared to live your best life after weight loss.
